Roles & Responsibilities 1. Checking copy for grammatical, spelling and typographical errors; 2. Marking copy with standard proofreading marks to notify writers and editors of necessary changes 3. Adding/deleting words, phrases or sentences to improve the reading of a text; 4. Liaising regularly with authors and publishers by phone and email; 5. Checking that authors have provided all the required materials and paperwork; 6. Resolving queries directly with the author, e.g. style and text inconsistencies; 7. Coding manuscripts for design features, such as hierarchy of headings, to instruct the production team; 8. Creating artwork briefs to detail the content of illustrations; 9. Ensuring that illustrations are correctly captioned and referred to in the text; 10. Producing or working to a style checklist to ensure consistency in hyphenation, capitalization, formatting of references, etc; 11. Maintaining awareness of new words or phrases coming into popular usage with a view to ensuring they're appropriate for the readership; 12. Retrieving articles from archives and rearranging within publications; 13. Preparing preliminary pages for the title, contents and preface of a publication; 14. Overseeing the work of indexers, typesetters and designers; 15. (Increasingly for freelancers) typesetting and designing layout; 16. Ensuring that publications are prepared on budget and to schedule; 17. (For those who are self-employed) managing marketing and business activities? Key Skills 1. Excellent written English, including good spelling and grammar 2. A meticulous approach to their work and an eye for detail 3. The ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines 4. A love of and feel for language. Job Location: Coimbatore Qualification: The job is open to graduates of all disciplines, but a degree in English, publishing or languages may be advantageous.
